Game Rules for Eat Right Cards

1. Food War - (2-8 players; easy level)

Objective: To win all the cards.

  1. The dealer shuffles the deck and deals ALL of the cards out. The players do not look at their cards but keep them in their hands face down.
  2. Each player simultaneously turns over the top card in his hand to compare the Overall Values of their cards (number at the bottom center of card).
  3. The person playing the card with the highest value wins all the cards played, and adds them to the bottom of his stack.
  4. If two cards tie for the highest value, then each tying player turns up another card and compares again – the winner taking all the cards.
  5. Play continues until one player wins all the cards (this take a very long time).
  6. Variant - Instead of using the Overall Value of the food item, you can play using just the Vitamin Power or Calories instead, calling it "Vitamin War," or "Calorie War."

2.  Snack Attack! (2-8 players; easy level)

Objective - To EAT as many good snacks – “fruit” and “veggie” cards – as possible. Junk food is NOT a good snack.

Deck - Use only the “Fruit,” “Veggie,” “Junk” and “Exercise” cards (total 26 cards). Do not use any that say “Grains,” “Meat,” or “Dairy.”

  1. Deal - Mix up the cards and spread them out face down in the center of the table. This is the store. Do not deal any cards to any players. Choose someone to play first.
  2. Play - On your turn, you can only do one of four things:
    1. Go Shopping (draw two cards from the store)
    2. Eat A Snack (put one of your cards in front of you face up)
    3. Return A Snack (swap one of your cards with the store)
    4. Yell “Snack Attack!” (return ALL your cards to the store forcing the other players to draw one card from the store and eat it immediately)
  3. Going Shopping - The first thing that each player must do is go shopping. Just draw any two cards from the store.
  4. Eat A Snack - Choose a snack from your hand and place it face up in front of you. This is how you win the game – the player to eat the most snacks that are good wins the game.
  5. Return A Snack - You can return a snack to the store if you haven’t eaten it yet. Choose one card from your hand and put it back into the store. Then pick one new card from the store.
  6. Snack Attack - You must return ALL the cards in your hand to the store (you must have at least 2 cards in your hand). Every other player must go shopping for one snack and eat it immediately no matter what it is.

Play continues clockwise until all of the snacks are eaten. If there are no more snacks in the store, you must Eat the ones in your hand. If on your turn, you have no cards in your hand, and only one card remains in the store, you must eat it immediately.

  • Special Cards -
    • Sugar Shock” – If you eat “Sugar Shock,” you lose all of your eaten snacks at that moment. They are completely removed from the game, along with the “Sugar Shock” card. However, if you already ate “Exhilarating Exercise,” then “Sugar Shock” has no affect on your snacks, but you do lose the “Exhilarating Exercise” card.
    • Exhilarating Exercise” – If you eat the “Exhilarating Exercise” card then remove any of your eaten junk cards from the game.
    • Broccoli & Spinach – If you eat either one of these snacks, you get to remove one junk food that you have already eaten.

Winning - For each junk snack you have eaten, you must remove one good snack. After that, count up your remaining good snacks. The player with the most wins! If there is a tie, the tied players must play again for a tie-breaker.

3. Build-A-Meal (2-4 players; advanced level)

Objective - To be the first to get rid of all your cards after creating two balanced meals. A balanced meal consists of:

  • At least 2 Grains
  • At least 2 Fruits OR Veggies
  • At least 1 Meat OR 1 Dairy
  • Total Calories must NOT exceed 600
  1. Deal - Dealer shuffles cards and deals 8 cards to each player. The remaining cards are placed face down in the center of the table, forming the stock. The top card of the stock is turned face up and placed beside the stock – this is the discard pile.
  2. Play - Beginning with the player left of the dealer, each player must draw the top card – either from the stock or the discard pile. He may then lay down any completed meals as described above. He can also add a card to his own meal provided the meal does not exceed the Total Calorie limit of 600. Note: some food cards count as multiple food groups and multiple servings (see the card description).
  3. Playing Special Cards -
    1. Exhilarating Exercise – This card allows you to build a meal over the 600 calorie limit by 200 calories (the card is worth -200 calories). Play this with your meal or add it to your meal with another food item to get rid of your cards.
    2. Sugar Shock – The Sugar Shock card completely ruins an opponent’s meal. You can play it at any time against another player that has already completed a meal. That meal and the Sugar Shock card are then added to the discard pile. The player losing the meal will immediately draw from the stock, the same number of cards that were lost in the meal.
    3. Broccoli & Spinach – If you put broccoli or spinach in your meal, you get to take another turn after you discard.
    4. Junk Food – The junk food cards can be a part of any meal provided the meal does not exceed the Total Calorie limit of 600.
  4. Discard - The player must then discard one card on top of the discard pile. If the last card of the stock has been drawn, the next player may either take the top card of the discard pile, or may turn over the discard pile to form a new stock (without shuffling) and draw the top card, after which play proceeds as normal.
  5. Winning - When a player lays down all of his cards after having made two balanced meals, that player wins!

4. Duel (2 players; Advanced Level)

Objective -  The first player to win 3 rounds wins the match. You can win a round by either:

  • causing your opponent to eat more than 1000 calories, or
  • accumulating for yourself over 100 value points.

Deal - Remove the Spinach & Broccoli cards from the deck. Deal 3 cards to each player, face down. Place the remaining cards in the center of the table face down to for the stock.

  1. Who Goes First - Each player chooses one card from their hand and places it face down in front of them. Both players then turn this card face up at the same time. The person who has the card with the most Calories plays first. If it’s a tie, then the person with the lowest overall value plays first.
  2. Play - On your turn, you can do only one of three things:
    1. Eat (add a card to your own meal)  - If you decide to Eat on your turn, you should eat a food that has a high overall value (the number at the bottom center of your card). Choose a card from your hand and place it in front of you face up next to your first card - this is your meal. As soon as your meal has a total overall value of at least 100, then you win! Watch out – the Calories of the food item you decide to eat also get added to your meal. If your meal totals 1,000 calories or more, you lose!
    2. Attack (force your opponent to eat one of your cards) - If you decide to Attack on your turn, you should force your opponent to eat a high Calorie food (top right of your card). Choose a card from your hand and add it to your opponent's meal. As soon as your opponent’s meal has a total calorie count of at least 1,000, you win! Watch out – the Overall Value of the food item you force your opponent to eat also gets added to his/her meal. If your opponent’s meal totals 100 Overall Value points or more, you lose!
    3. Draw (pick up one card from the stock and add it to your hand) - If you decide to Draw on your turn, you will add another card to your hand, but you will not be able to Eat or Attack.
  3. Other Items:
    • Exhilarating Exercise – when you eat this card, it only reduces the total Calorie count of your meal. It does not count towards the Overall Value points.
If you Eat on your turn and you reach 100 Overall Value and 1,000 Calories at the same time, you lose.
    • If you Attack on your turn and your opponent reaches 100 Overall Value and 1,000 Calories at the same time, you lose.
    • It may be helpful to keep a pencil & paper handy to add up your points.
  4. Winning - Once a player reaches 100 Overall Value points, that player wins the round! OR, once a player reaches 1,000 Calories, that player loses the round! The first player to win 3 rounds wins the match!
